Love Heals, the Alison Gertz Foundation for AIDS held its Annual Love Heals at Luna Farm in Sagaponack this past Saturday night. The event was co-hosted by Peter Davis and Mary Alice Stephenson and this years theme of "A Picture Perfect Summer," also included a silent auction, dancing, and a BBQ courtesy of Deforest Gibbs of Charleston, South Carolina.

Alison Gertz was infected with HIV through a single sexual encounter when she was 16. Soon after discovering that she had AIDS, she made her story public in an effort to help others and quickly rose to become an internationally recognized spokesperson for AIDS awareness and prevention.

She devoted her final years to providing young people with the information they needed to protect themselves—information that could have protected her from contracting HIV. She knew that if it had happened to her, it could happen to anyone.

After Ali died in 1992, her three best friends, Stefani Greenfield, Victoria Leacock Hoffman and Dini von Mueffling, continued her mission by cofounding Love Heals, the Alison Gertz Foundation for AIDS Education.

Fifteen years later, Love Heals reaches approximately 50,000 young people each year through our speakers bureau, educational video and lesson guide, and girls empowerment program.

Love Heals visits schools and community groups to reach both young people and those individuals who impact their lives, placing special emphasis on outreach to high-risk communities. They believe that HIV/AIDS education is the right of every person and that it should be taught in a safe and neutral atmosphere, in a nonjudgmental manner, and within the context of comprehensive sexuality education. Americans between the age of 13 and 24 are contracting HIV at a rate of 2 per hour, which translates into an estimated 20,000 new cases a year.

Among the guests at Saturday night’s event were Alison Brod, Dini von Mueffling, Ann Caruso, Andrew Saffir, Daniel Benedict, Anna Weiss, Becca Diamond, Christina Greeven Cuomo and Chris Cuomo.

Last Saturday afternoon in Shubert Alley between 44th and 45th Street, they held their annual love-in “Broadway Barks” where a lot of dogs and cats are gathered looking for permanent homes.

This organization was founded 12 years ago by Mary Tyler Moore and Bernadette Peters as a means of “providing more attention “to the plight of thousands of homeless dogs and cats in the Metropolitan area.

So down there in Shubert Alley on that hot Saturday afternoon these pets stood a good shot of getting their wish. Actors from more than 30 Broadway shows pitched in the annual adopt-a-thon. Both Moore and Peters were on hand.

Both the ASPCA and Pedigree donated $50,000 each to Broadway Barks, which will distribute the money to all of its participating organizations.

“See how many perfect pets there are available,” Peters, who recently returned to Broadway in the musical revival of “A Little Night Music,” told the audience of several thousand. “You want a Jack Russell? We got them. You want a Great Dane? We got them.”

While some of the dogs onstage had been found on the side of a highway or wandering the city streets, others were surrendered after their families had to relocate because of financial reasons.
